Gary Speed put United in front after fifteen minutes and after Les Green had equalised for Thorne Colliery after thirty-three minutes, it was Speed that restored the Leeds lead within a minute with a fine header from a Darren Edmonds free-kick. Carl Shutt replaced Michael Sloanes at Centre Forward after Half-Time and he soon made his presence felt by crossing low for Michael Knop to get in a good shot which hit the inside of the post before finishing in the eager arms of the Thorne keeper. It was Paul Green who scored next as he equalised for the home team on the hour mark. It proved to be the final goal, although Carl Shutt twice went close in the final ten minutes. Len Curtis replaced Andy Crosby at Centre Half after sixty-six minutes and Russell Wigley replaced Gary Speed at Outside Left with three minutes left on the clock, leaving Paul Watson and Ross Morgan as the unused Leeds substitutes.
